The Saviour

The SaviourChrist the Saviour and Giver of Life, originally painted by John Zographos. This half-figure of Christ, his right hand extended in blessing and his left hand holding a beautiful bible, corresponds to the Pantocrator icons. The text in the icon border states: “The icon of Jesus Christ our Lord was painted in the year 1393-1394.”

The Dormition

The DormitionBehind the elongated deathbed of Mary surrounded by mourning apostles is a large image of Christ with the soul of his mother on his arm, completely surrounded by an aureole. Above his head is an angel with six wings. The two bishops could be Hierotheos and Dionysius, who were both disciples of Paul and bishop of Athens.

Mary Magdalene in the Garden with ChristMary Magdalene recognies Jesus in the garden after his Resurrection and says in Hebrew “Rabboni” (Master). Jesus says: “Touch me not; for I am not yet ascended to my Father”. At the sepulchre is the empty tomb with the grave clothes that were wrapped around the body of Christ. John 20:1-18.

The Descent into Limbo (The Resurrection)The resurrected Christ is standing in the light flooding down from above, over the abyss of darkness, where the broken doors and hinges are still visible. Christ has liberated from hell the forefathers and Kings of the Old Testament, now standing behind him, as well as Eve. Finally Christ pulls out Adam into the light of mercy. Above, angels soar with the Cross and tools of torture in their hands. The picture is traditional.
